Web development is the creation of website functionality beyond regular pages of static content. Web development projects can range from the creation of contact forms, to complex bespoke web applications that automate your business. Examples of web applications that you might be familiar with include Gmail, Google Apps, Facebook, Twitter and Ebay. Each of these well-known services is a piece of software that performs certain tasks, and is accessed via a web browser.
Our approach to web development is tried and tested. We take time to listen to your requirements and can help you develop a working specification to develop your ideas. We then select a development approach to suit your project, which may involve extending off-the-shelf products, or starting from scratch. We develop in an agile way to allow for constantly changing business needs and we test iteratively throughout development to reduce the chances of bugs.
Finally, once your development is complete, we don't abandon you and move to the next project, we are available to support and extend your software.
Above all, our web development is designed to be:
Our development expertise can be split into three main areas:
A dynamic website is a site that does more than serve pages of content for visitors to read, and generally involves a level of interaction with users. Typical scenarios include membership, events, listings, messaging, online ticketing, uploads, downloads, payments & subscriptions, etc. The possibilites are endless, and if you can think it, we can build it *.
Web applications are software installed on a central server and accessed via a web browser from anywhere with an internet connection. Web applications are particularly suited to situations where you want to foster collaboration amongst staff, customers or suppliers, or have a distributed workforce. A web application can be used to streamline your business processes and save you hours of administration. Building an application from scratch that is tailored to fit your business needn't be as expensive as you might think, and has the advantage of being flexible for the future as your business needs change.
There are a number of reasons why you might be looking for a new web developer. Some are unreliable, some have limited ability, some limited capacity, and some just disappear (where do they go?!). We've heard all of these stories, and many others, and we are happy to work on dynamic websites and web applications that you have had built elsewhere.
* this is not strictly true, but we'll soon let you know if your plan isn't feasible.
After your new website is up and running, one of the most important considerations is keeping its content fresh and up-to-date. But, you don't want to have to come to us every time you want to add a new image, change a piece of text that's out of date, or create a new page.
That's why we build the majority of our websites using a Content Management System (CMS). This allows you to login to your site and make the updates you need, there and then; no waiting and no charge (we're always here to help out if you need us though).
We use open source (and free) CMSs including WordPress and Joomla, but
we love CMS Made Simple*. We love it because our clients love it.
By the way, our website and blog are both built on open source software. Contact Us for more information on the right CMS for you.
* Winner of the Best Overall Open Source CMS at the 2010 Packt Awards.
Not every web project is straightforward, and you may find that some web developers are not able to give you exactly what you want. We specialise in solving problems and finding solutions. No matter what your requirements, we have the creativity and technical ability to give you exactly what you want.
We design and create complex and dynamic, database-driven websites and web applications using the latest technologies. If you require custom programming for a new project or an existing site, we'd love to hear from you.

We won't bore you with the statistics - you buy online, your friends buy online, everyone buys online. eCommerce is here to stay, and if you sell products, you simply can't afford not to sell on the web.
We've been building eCommerce websites since the beginning, which means we have an in-depth understanding of what works, and what doesn't. We've seen amazing stories where clients have grown from nothing to market leaders because of their decision to sell their product(s) on the web (oh, and a lot of hard work!).
Our experience means we can help you from the start on all aspects of running an eCommerce website, from selecting the best platforms & payment gateways, right through to marketing your site online. Choosing WDL as your eCommerce development partner is a great way to give your venture the best chance.
We specialise in JShop Development (see below), and also offer bespoke eCommerce solutions, so whether you want a fully featured out-of-the-box solution, or a highly personalised site, we are able to help.
JShop Server is an advanced piece of software that allows the rapid development and deployment of a fully featured eCommerce website. 'Out-of-the-Box' eCommerce solutions aren't for everyone, but we rarely come across requirements which JShop can't fulfill.
WDL have been building eCommerce websites using JShop for many years, and we've built up a great relationship with the software developers. Our expertise and knowledge of the platform means that we can get the best out of it for our clients.

'Software as a service' (SAAS) is becoming a popular way for businesses to purchase and access their software. Software is hosted on the internet or in the cloud, and accessed by web browser or mobile application. Typically, this model means relatively cheap setup costs, and access to your data from anywhere that you have an internet connection.
We offer two of our own SAAS solutions, one for email marketing (Circulate.it) and the other for hosted email & calendaring (Mailr.co.uk). We can also help you research and deploy Open Source and paid solutions for:
If you need something tailored to your specific requirements, we offer a web development service, and can build bespoke SAAS solutions for your business. Let us know what you need by contacting us.
