Zero-Click Search

Written by Paul - 14/07/2025

User behaviour has changed, and the new way of searching is here to stay. Zero-click search is the result of this shift, and it’s reshaping how we think about SEO.

What is Zero-Click Search and Why Does It Matter?

Zero-click search is exactly what it sounds like: when someone performs a search on Google (or another search engine) and finds the information they need right on the search results page, without clicking on a website. It’s becoming more common and, honestly, it’s here to stay.

The Challenge for Marketers and SEOs

The challenge with this behaviour change is measuring how our campaigns perform, especially if our website is focused on providing purely informational content. How can we be sure our website is generating traffic when users get the answers they need directly on the search results page?

How Zero-Click Search Affects Website Traffic

In the past, when a user searched for something, websites competed to be on the first page, hoping to attract clicks and conversions. But now, with the rise of AI-generated snippets, People Also Ask boxes and other rich results, many users don’t need to click through to a blog post to get the information they’re after.

Does this mean blogs are dead? Well, not exactly.

I’m literally writing this article to tell you about zero-click searches – so don’t give up just yet.

The key takeaway is that SEOs still need to create valuable content and measure the effectiveness of our strategies, but the way we measure success has changed. We can no longer just aim to rank number one and hope for a click. Instead, we need to consider that the ideal position may not be at the top of the page but perhaps around position four just after the AI features and sponsored posts.

Measuring the Impact of Rich Results

Another important shift is the focus on measuring rich results. This has always been a goal, but now more than ever, we need to assess whether our well-crafted articles are being used to generate rich results like snippets or featured answers. That’s a key part of understanding our content’s performance through Google Analytics and Search Console.

How Zero-Click Searches Are Changing User Behaviour

Zero-click searches primarily affect informational search intent. When users are searching for services or products, traditional SEO still applies – optimising listings and focusing on conversion-friendly elements. But when creating content designed to provide information, our measurement strategies need to evolve. Instead of simply tracking clicks, we need to track engagement with rich snippets and whether our content appears in AI-driven results.
